Imbolc is the Pagan festival of light, the coming of the spring from the darkness of winter. Most pagans celebrate this time of year by lighting candles, invoking the Goddess/Saint Brigid, and dedicating to their path, whether it be a year and a day or dedicating themselves to a matron or patron Deity. This Sabbat is typically celebrated on February 1st.
For those who follow the Asatru path, Imbolc is known as Disting, the time of winters waining and the time to prep the land for the fertile plantings of Spring. The land would also be blessed during the planting preparation. Disting is also the time when one would count their cattle. Like the rune that represents wealth and possessions, Fehu, this rune is also the representation of domesticated cattle, a source of wealth and life for the Norse people. Calves born near or on the time of Disting was a sign of great wealth to come.
Because the moon is waxing this Disting/Imbolc, it is a good time to share wealth and health with those you love. Invite some friends over for a simple Imbolc/Disting ritual. Decorate the altar with white and gold, as well as symbols of the sun and cattle. Because the days are getting longer, the lighting of gold or yellow candles inscribed with symbols of the sun and the rune Fehu can help usher in the Spring. Bake round cookies (whatever you like) and add a little lemon zest or flavor, as the bright citrus is a symbol of success, love, and friendship. Inscribe the cookies with sun symbols as well as the runes Fehu and Ing, in honor of the solar twins Freyja and Frey. Be sure to offer some to the Gods as well.
If you have a magical garden, plant something new to give back to the land that gives you so much. Offer moss agate to the nature spirits that bless your sacred space. If you don't have a garden, you can plant something in your yard, be it a sapling or other foliage. While walking on a forest path, burry a coin or small stone under the roots of an aged tree in thanks for all the gifts it has given the land and to show your appreciation.
However you celebrate the return of Spring, let it be a joyous time of togetherness and warmth. Blessed Be :).
