Locked Chats

Edited because the Poll is no longer on the front-page.  If you're looking for it, you can find it HERE.  If that link doesn't work click the Poll tab and look in Featured Polls.  It should be there.

There is a poll about the chats on the front-page. And whatever your stance, I do urge everyone to vote as we all have a part in making this site what we want it to be.

That said, I'm against locked chatrooms. I have been since the first one appeared. Now I'm going to explain why.

Witchbook is an awesome site that is open to everyone. It's, I think, one of the most friendly and welcoming pagan social sites on the internet. Unlike other places that are clogged with trolls, Lady Gaga worship and endless drama *cough*paganspace*cough*. This makes Witchbook some place I'm happy to recommend to others.

But then I go into the chat room. Oh there is no one there, well that happens. I look over to the list of rooms, I see there are 4 people in one of the locked chatrooms. Now I DO have the password to the Van (but not the Corner). But that password is only given out to those who ask and only if they are over 18.

While I can understand the desire to have "adult" discussions, I think this is  the worst way to accomplish that on a site that is supposed to be welcoming and open to everyone.

What happens when someone new (over 18) wanders into chat and there is no one there to tell them the password? How do you think they feel, not being able to talk to other pagans they can SEE are there?chatroom they can't even GET the password to? Is it really that hard to imagine the dejection and resentment of those confronted with these situation? Is it really that hard to understand how having locked chatrooms undermine the whole idea of "open and welcoming"? And what about the teens? We have people of all ages coming in, looking for answers or at least someone to point them in the right direction as well as dicussion on all manner of subjects. How do you think they feel when they can't talk to people because they are in a locked chatroom that they can't even GET the password for?

I want to talk to people. All people. Not just those that know the password to get into the locked clubhouse. That is the whole point of my coming on a social networking site.

To my mind, the solution is get rid of the locked rooms. Then, it's up to a combination of moderator presence in the chatroom and the users being sensible. We have visible ages with the usernames. So there is no question of not knowing what age a person is (and if they lied about their age, there isn't anything anyone can do anyhow). We have a Whisper function and private chat with a given user if someone just HAS to tell someone else the juicy NC-17 details. Never mind the IM in the dashboard. And it's not that hard to keep discussion of interesting topics G-Rated. Even things like menstruation, fertility religions and romantic relationships.

The only question now is:

A)Is it more important that Witchbook is an open and welcoming site?

B)Or is the "convenience" of a locked chatroom that only some can get to more important?

I'm voting for A.

ok,, im not on chat much anymore, but to my understanding, the lock chatrooms were created for more adult chat,, what ever adult chat it may be,,so that minors were not expossed to the conversations,,with that being said,, wouldnt removing the locked chat just cause the same problems as before?? i know there are times i do not want to have to censor my words or worry about everything im saying just because there is a minor present in the chat,, im 38 years old,, i should be able to have chats with adults and not worry about the little ears listening in,, i am mainly in the lobby when im in chat,, and i also use the private chat function, but sometimes the conversation is between more than 2 people,, hence the locked chat,, thats my 2 cents,, i just feel if you take them away,, you are censoring peoples right to chat between adults,,

I've never seen anything even vaguely interesting going on in any of the locked chat rooms, so I think that the G rated in the big chat room needs to go and move it up to at least PG 13, so I can say "damn" at least if I want to. I don't feel like I need to censor myself from the sensibilities of those over the age of 13 anyway. Most if they're studying witchcraft have probably heard the word "fuck" at least once and have not had their virgin ears bleed from it. It's not like there's cyber sex going on in the first place, and if there was, I would leave this site post-haste. Those of us who are adults around here should be able to behave ourselves. So, yeah... kinda pointless, the password protected rooms. I can understand wanting an "on topic" kind of discussion occasionally, though, so don't get rid of them. And in the meantime if someone is in the password protected, room, you CAN be in the front room at the same time... just go over and check on the main chat every once in a while so that those out there don't feel completely ignored.

Goodness gracious!!! What a LOT of energy there is in this little discussion!!! I have read what everyone has to say and will think about all of it before I comment further. A couple of observations: Some people are obviously bent on talking about things or in ways inappropriate to the G rated Lobby. Second, I myself avoid chat because it's just not my cup of tea. Third, Vigdisdotter, you are ALWAYS well thought out and I for one have never seen you be rude to anyone, even when provoked. I am one of the people who had a difficult time with some things I saw on this site recently. There I said it. Does that make me immature for not going direct to the people who I found offensive??? Well, I was raised to "go through the channels" and I spoke only for myself in doing so. I still think the site can handle an 18+ only chat room (but would vote for only one of them) so people can get raunchy if they feel like it without nauseating the rest of us, who are simply out for pagan companionship and chat. Some people ALWAYS go there and that's a fact we have to deal with in all of this. Ok, I guess I DID have an opinion after all. Thanks for asking, V.

We didn't make the rules about minors, though there is liability. Slap the pass on the front page so it's available all the time. Good suggestion. Then minors could possibly get in, sure, but it's quite a willful act to type a password to a room they shouldn't be in. It kind of acts like a waiver, or it could. If you type this pass, you’re confirming you’re an adult and that you understand whatever goes in this room in conjunction with TOS. If anyone chooses to believe that the people who go in there have untoward intentions, are willfully trying to exclude people then there isn't much I can do about that except reassure them. It doesn't make what they think true. I spend plenty of time in both chats. Sometimes I can't keep up with both, plus the scrolling issue. I should be able to sit out of a busier chat sometimes & go to a slower one. I should be able to take advantage of the options open to me without being judged a clique-monger. WB should have the means to act in such a way that protects it in situations where liability is involved. If I’m in any chat, I am available for any questions and comments or requests for passwords unless I’m afk until we find resolution for this issue.

My post is too long so this will be in 2 parts. Sorry. Jynxie brought up some really good points about some of the things that go on in chat, & I don't blame her for having no clear resolution to offer. What goes on in the lounge, is not always what should go on in the lounge. While there have been no complaints as of yet, it would just take 1 person being offended by profanity or chat inappropriate to minors & the thing would have to be addressed. More like, they just wouldn't come back rather than complain though. I know that usually adults have the capacity to look in the room list & make sure they ARE acting appropriately when minors are present. I am sure to note it myself since a few people I like to chat with have taken up an opposing stance to the pass protected rooms. You don't have to be a minor to be offended knowing that minors go in there. There is no question in the pass rooms about what's appropriate except for the TOS rules. I can go & do the things Fearless, Frao and Jynxie talked about. I do not see why anyone should feel unwelcome because I exercise a choice that is w/in my rights. It doesn’t mean I am intentionally excluding anyone to make them feel bad. It does not mean I am going to go cavort with the 'cool kids'. I don't really feel that's a fair assessment, as the password is available to all those 18+.
